Erik ten Hag is determined to end Manchester United's six-year trophy wait and use it as a launchpad to get them back to winning the biggest prizes.

The last trophy United won was the Europa League under Jose Mourinho, back in 2017, with the current barren spell their longest wait for silverware in four decades. United host Everton in the FA Cup tonight, a competition which provided Sir Alex Ferguson with the first trophy of his glittering reign, which included 13 league titles.

Ten Hag won the Dutch Cup with Ajax, before winning the first of three Eredivisie titles and is convinced he can achieve a similar feat at United, who remain in the EFL Cup and Europa League. “We have a lot of opportunities to win a trophy,” said Ten Hag. “We are still in many competitions.

“To win a trophy is something great. It will give you experience and help you to win more titles and more trophies - maybe also bigger trophies, that is definitely true.

“So first you have to go over the line and get that experience, because it’s always the same players who are always winning trophies and that’s not a coincidence.

“It has to do, of course, with a player's capabilities and often with their mentality. We have some players in this team who have that experience of winning and that can help us.

“But you have to get into a position where you can win something and I know the season is long, especially with such a lot of games ahead. So don't get distracted because, when you think too far ahead, you get distracted, so focus on the team's progress, the team's development, that's what it's all about.”

United have won six games in a row in all competitions, but Ten Hag is demanding more from his players and is convinced they can get to another level of form and consistency.

“There is space for improvement, so it's about improving in a lot of aspects,” said Ten Hag. "Then, obviously, your process, your way of playing, is better. When that’s better, the opportunity to win games is higher - that's what we have to work for.”

One player Ten Hag believes can be even better is Marcus Rashford, despite the forward having scored 12 goals already this term – seven more than he did in the whole of last season.

“First of all, always keep the focus,” said Ten Hag. “It doesn't matter if you're in the game or not in the game - keep focusing on scoring the goal.

“A player like Marcus, when they stay in the game, mentally focused, with 100 percent concentration, they only need one moment to change the game in a positive way. If Marcus develops that skill, he will score more goals and contribute to a successful season.”
