The international break appeared to come at the wrong time for Liverpool.

The Reds sit second in the Premier League table and just a point behind Manchester City after just one defeat from their opening 12 games. Their latest success saw them ease past Brentford 3-0 at Anfield.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side now have a week-and-a-half to wait for their next game as a clutch of their stars jet off to all corners of the globe. There’s still plenty of news coming out of Merseyside though. Take a look at all of the best Liverpool-themed headlines from Mirror Football from the past 24 hours:

Keane sends Liverpool message

Manchester United icon Roy Keane has told Liverpool to "sort themselves out" if they want to stand any chance of beating Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.

He said: "I think the standard hasn't been great the last month or two in the Premier League. The goals being conceded, the quality, Man City are excellent but the other teams need to sort themselves out. I still can't see beyond City, I really can't, even if they have some sort of blip."

Gary Neville also isn’t convinced, and has claimed that the Reds are “not capable” of lifting the title this term. Liverpool have a major chance to force themselves even further into contention after the international break as they come up against Pep Guardiola’s title winners.

Former chief hails FSG

Ex-Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has praised the controversial Fenway Sports Group by claiming they are “really good owners”. FSG have owned Liverpool since completing a £300million takeover in October 2010 and have helped them to their most successful period of the modern era.

However, fans have remained critical - John Henry’s decision to enter Liverpool into the European Super League a highly controversial move. Parry believes that they have far exceeded their remit with the Reds.

“I think Liverpool have done brilliantly under FSG and Jurgen Klopp,” Parry said on Up Front with Simon Jordan. “The Champions League win was terrific and I think the owners have achieved success with a sustainable model. They don’t want to lose money but they’re not in it to make money, they are in it to build long-term value. They are in it to win and I think they are really good owners."

Reds handed Man City boost

Returning to the title race, Liverpool might not have a better chance to beat Man City after the reigning champions were hit with a host of injury issues. Guardiola is already without the services of Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Gomez and John Stones.

Ederson, Nathan Ake and Mateo Kovacic have also all been forced out of international duty after picking up problems. Now, summer signing Matheus Nunes has become the latest to be struck down with an injury.

The former Wolves star was hopeful of appearing for Portugal against Liechtenstein and Iceland but has pulled out after being declared “clinically unfit”.
