Lily Allen has made a frank admission about husband David Harbour in the wake of recent split rumours.
The Smile singer turned actress revealed the Stranger Things star, who she secretly married in Las Vegas 2020, receives more attention from fans – and she is often asked for photos when people come up to them. But instead of her being in the pictures, the 38-year-old is the one left holding the camera – as they all want a picture with her husband. “They don’t even notice me. I’m just the photographer,” she joked in a recent interview.
Her anonymity now she lives in Brooklyn, New York with David and her two daughters Ethel, 11, and Marnie, 10, who she shares with ex-husband Sam Cooper, is something she relishes – and isn’t used to after all the tabloid attention she received in the UK back in the Noughties.
“No one knows who I am. Growing up with the attention I had in my twenties can lead to, sort of, narcissistic feelings. It’s nice to be in a relationship where somebody else gets all of that attention. It’s good for my ego,” Lily told Grazia magazine.
Lily’s comments come weeks after rumours she may have split from husband of three years David after being spotted without her wedding ring. In October, reports suggested her and David had 'barely been together' over the past several months. Lily's extremely busy schedule saw her spend the summer starring in London's West End production of The Pillowman, while David remained at home in New York. She was also said to have unfollowed him on social media, sparking reports of a fall out.
Inside Lily Allen and David Harbour's 'weird' US home they call 'clown house'But the couple have since put on a united front - and David appeared to shut down rumours of any marriage crisis, saying they were doing “so great”. Speaking around the time of the actors’ strike in America, he said the extra time at home had actually brought them closer together as a family.
He explained: "Ultimately, it's very good because you get to know someone. But, let me tell you, my wife likes when I go to work because it's nice for her to have her life and me to have my life and for us not to just annoy each other by being around all the time," he told magazine.
Revealing she can now “live in a true sense of the world, without judgment”, Lily is getting stuck into her new life over the pond and says she is rarely bothered by fans when she is out and about. After a successful singing career, she is now putting her efforts into acting and has enrolled in acting school, despite already landing theatre roles in the Olivier-nominated 2:22 A Ghost Story and the Sharon Horgan-produced TV drama, Dreamland.
While her career grows, Lily says her primary job is still being a mum as she “wants to be around my kids” after feeling “away with the fairies” when they were younger. Now four years sober, she doesn’t want to miss another moment. She confessed: “When I was younger, you were told that you could have it all. I believed that when I got pregnant, and then when I had my children, I realised that was a lie. You can’t and you have to make sacrifices.”
