Chelsea fans were left cringing after their side’s dramatic draw with Manchester City as Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davidson attempted to take grass out of Raheem Sterling ’s eye.

The England forward had played a key role for his side at Stamford Bridge after initially putting his side 2-1 ahead in the first half. While Chelsea could not hold on to victory - Cole Palmer eventually scoring late on to secure a 4-4 draw - there were still some more dramatics for Sterling to navigate late on.

During his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Sterling was pictured rubbing his eye. Interviewer Davidson noticed and said: “Huge display of character, wasn’t it, Raheem? Have you got something in your eye? What’s going on here?!”

Things then got even more bizarre as Davidson offered to try and remove whatever was bothering the forward. “Crazy game followed by…Oh you’ve got a bit…come here. You’ve got a bit of grass in your eye,” he said.

However, Sterling did not appear up for receiving any assistance. He replied: “You’re going to put some more dirt in my eye!”

Luckily, the rest of the interview went by without any more hitches. Supporters weren’t overly convinced though and took to social media with their thoughts on the exchange.

One fan said: “No way Sterling was letting the Sky Sports interviewer get that bit of grass out of his eye. The group chat would never forget,” while another wrote: “What a weird end to a post-match game. Who was the reporter trying to get grass out of Sterling’s eye? Weird and uncomfortable.”

The response did not really grow any warmer either. “The interviewer tried to take grass out of Sterling’s eye live on Sky. Bruv,” one fan wrote.

A final supporter also couldn’t hide their surprise. They responded: “Did the reporter just try and GRAB GRASS OUT OF RAHEEM’S EYE.”

Sterling now has a few weeks out of action before he turns his attention to Chelsea’s next Premier League assignment - a clash with Newcastle at St James’ Park in just over a fortnight’s time. The winger will not be in action for England over the international break having once again been left out of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.

Explaining the decision to omit him, England boss Southgate said: “The door is 100 percent open not only for Raheem but also other players who aren’t in this squad. We don’t need to know about his quality, his personality. He is a crucial part of the journey we’ve been on.

“It’s an area of the pitch where we have as much competition as anywhere. Bowen has started the season well. Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer are doing well. It’s a changing landscape there.

“We used to not have wingers, that’s why we used wing-backs in Russia. We have a lot of depth in those areas now, that’s what people need to understand.”
