The Newcastle fan who was involved in an angry touchline argument with Kieran Trippier has admitted he regrets the "stupid" exchange.

The former Tottenham and Atletico Madrid star was pictured in the midst of a heated conversation with a supporter after Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Brazilian teammate Joelinton had to intervene as he dragged Trippier away before the defender was consoled by boss Eddie Howe.

Now, the fan at the heart of the incident has revealed his identity as Thomas Willoughby and is remorseful over his actions. He took to Facebook in the aftermath of the defeat.

He wrote: "It was me, I travelled all day and was very frustrated with the performance. I regret having a go at them because I know what all these players have done for this club.

"Everyone's done stupid things. I hold my hands up and admit I shouldn't have had a go at them that much but was just the heat of the moment."

Trippier spoke about the incident during the loss on the South Coast and did not appear to hold any ill feelings towards Willoughby. Speaking to Sky Sports, the England man said: "The fans are emotional, of course they are.

"They have travelled a long way, they spend a lot of money to come and watch us. I was just having a chat with one of them, I said we are giving everything.

"There is no need to panic, we are still in a good position in the league, we are still in the Champions League, Carabao Cup quarter-finals, there is no need to panic.

"We got beat, we do apologise for that result, but the most important thing is that the lads are giving everything. We are giving more under the circumstances."

Newcastle boss Howe also gave an insight into Trippier's mindsight and was keen to put the incident to bed. He said: "Kieran is fine. Emotions run high, we all feel emotional. No problems. We thank all of our away support, that was tough for them today."

Newcastle now face a two-week break for the upcoming internationals - Trippier is set to be in action for England after being named in the latest Three Lions' squad by Gareth Southgate. Heading into the final break of the calendar year, Newcastle sit seventh in the Premier League standings after winning six of their opening 12 games.

Their next assignment pits them against Chelsea at St James' Park before a potentially decisive Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital. A home game against Manchester United then rounds off a tricky trio of fixtures upon their return.
