Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero may never have got their much anticipated reunion in Barcelona but two of Argentina's greatest ever players are working together again.

It's been confirmed that Messi, last month crowned Ballon d'Or winner for a record-extending eighth time, will become the co-owner of KRÜ Esports. The company was founded by Aguero in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, having initially started streaming games during lockdown periods.

His organisation has since grown, with his teams having competed in major e-sports competitions such as Valorant and Rocket League. And Aguero's own hands-on involvement has increased since the ex-Manchester City star was forced to retire in 2021 having been diagnosed with heart problems.

That summer, both Aguero and Messi had helped their country land the Copa America, which at the time represented a first senior international title for both players. And they seemed set to join forces at club level when the former left City for Barcelona.

However, his arrival coincided with the departure of Messi, who somewhat reluctantly left the Catalan giants for PSG. Following his enforced retirement though, Aguero did join the Argentina squad in a non-playing capacity for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which culminated in glory for Messi and co.

Via a social media video, the 35-year-old announced: "I'm happy to share a club with Leo, of course now in a new stage and with other challenges. It's an honour to have him as a part of KRÜ.

"He's the best footballer in history, and he's also a great friend. He is a figure who inspires everyone and will be a great addition to the scene as a whole," said Aguero, who was previously rumoured to be quitting the company.

The video concluded by flicking to Messi on his laptop, who raised his water bottle and smiled at the camera. And he then uttered "Vamo a jugar," which translates to "let's play" in his native language and mirrors the hashtag that accompanied Aguero's post.

The announcement comes following the 36-year-old taking the MLS by storm with David Beckham's Inter Miami. Messi has scored 11 goals in 14 games for the US club since his high-profile move in July.
