Gardeners’ World's Monty Don pays tribute to late dog in final resting place

Gardeners’ World star Monty Don has shared a heartbreaking tribute to his late dog Nellie.

The TV presenter has revealed where his dog's final resting place is as well as sharing a heartfelt message. He announced last week that sweet Nellie had passed away after being diagnosed with cancer back in June of this year.

He said that she now rests in the coppice, alongside his dog Nigel and the other six dogs who were an important part of his life for 32 years. The 68-year-old said that Nellie was buried in one of his jackets and her favourite treats and tennis balls were buried with her.

The Gardeners' World host, said: "Quite naughty - she was an arch thief who could melt your heart by gazing soulfully at you having nicked and eaten a freshly baked birthday cake left briefly to cool... But had not a bad bone in her body. We miss her terribly but celebrate the 8 years that she enriched our lives."

Monty took to his Instagram page to share the sad news that Nellie had passed away. Alongside a sweet photo of the adorable dog, he wrote: "I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night. She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now.

"We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits. Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear. So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad."

Fans of the star flooded the comments with their well wishes. One wrote: "Sending love to you all, such a sad time losing out doggos ~ they are the magic in our lives."

As a second commented: "So sad to lose these members of our family. As mine lays across my lap tonight I am thankful for every moment she is with me x," with another adding: "Beautiful Nell, she is wrapped in your love. So so sorry."

A fourth took to the comments to say: "I’m so very sorry Monty. I’ve had goldens for many years and while they give us so much joy, saying goodbye is the hardest thing in the world. Big hugs and run free with Nigel, sweet Nell."

Monty's dog Nigel also sadly passed away three years ago in 2020. At the time he explained that the golden retriever had been having "violent fits all night" before he died in May of that year. He said the tragic moment was difficult for him and his family to process as Nigel had never suffered with seizures before.
