Almost 30 Wetherspoon pubs are at risk of closing, after another boozer shut for good last month.
Wetherspoon pub "The Capitol" in Forest Hill London shut its doors on October 15 last month - but it's not the only site potentially set to shut. The popular pub chain announced last year that it was to close 32 of its sites but reiterated that the move was a commercial decision" adding that it was a "misinterpretation" to suggest the move was down to difficult trading conditions.
In its July trading update this year, Wetherspoon said it had already sold 28 sites this year and a further 22 were still on the market. Of the closed pubs, 15 had a lease expire or the company exercised its "break clause" - this allowed both Wetherspoon and the landlord to end the tenancy early. As of last month, Spoons said that it had 827 pubs across the UK and Ireland.
The chain said that " almost all" of the pubs closing their doors were in areas where there was another Wetherspoon site nearby. Some of the sales of the pubs are being managed by the commercial retail estate firm CBRE Group and Savills and as of writing 28 Wetherspoon pubs are listed as being for sale.
This means they could potentially close if a buyer is not found - or if a buyer takes over but decides to close the pub. According to the firm's website, there are currently 17 Wetherspoon pubs which are classed as being "available". This means these sites are up for sale and could be saved if a buyer is found.
All of the country's airport Wetherspoons pubs ranked from best to worstA further 11 are classed as "under offer" which means that a buyer has presented an offer that is being considered by the seller. However, even though an offer has been made, it doesn't necessarily mean the deal is definitely going through. So this does mean these sites are at risk - however, there is no official date for the potential closures. CBRE Group and Savills website covering the potential Wetherspoon sales is updated often and the pubs listed in this article were correct as of writing.
