Ryan Reynolds' Premier League dream shows no signs of slowing down - as Wrexham have made a superb start to the season.

The Welsh club, who were promoted from the National League last term, are third in League Two after 16 games played. The top three teams will be automatically promoted to League One, meaning Wrexham are on course to make another step up.

Phil Parkinson's side proved their promotion credentials on Saturday by winning 2-0 at Notts County. Second-half goals from Elliot Lee and Ollie Palmer were enough for Wrexham to beat their promotion rivals at Meadow Lane and remain in the top three.

Parkinson admitted the victory was one of his best as manager of Wrexham. Their promotion form is staggering considering they were thumped 5-3 by MK Dons on the opening day of the season and trounced 5-0 at table-toppers Stockport in September.

Reynolds, who completed a takeover of Wrexham with fellow actor Rob McElhenney in February 2021, revealed his Premier League target ahead of their FA Cup tie against Sheffield United in January. The game finished 3-3 before the Blades won the replay 3-1.

"In 10 years' time the plan has and always will be the Premier League," Reynolds told football icons Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes on the BBC. "If it's theoretically possible to go from the fifth tier to the Premier League, why wouldn’t we try?

"Nobody has ever done anything great in this world thinking, 'You know what, let’s go halfway'. So let’s go all the way and we believe we can do that. Call us crazy, but that's what we want to do. Because we’re in this church today (Wrexham's Racecourse Ground), if I was Sheffield United I’d be taking this game very seriously. That’s all I’ll say."

Reynolds and McElhenney picked up Wrexham in the fifth tier of English football. If they finish in the top three of League Two this season - or win the play-offs - they will be in the third tier - just two promotions away from reaching the Premier League.

Obviously, it will become a lot harder for Wrexham to fly up English football's pyramid as they get closer to the promised land. They will need to bring in better, more expensive players, employ more staff and improve the club's infrastructure.

Whether Wrexham reach the Premier League remains to be seen, but their fans are loving the journey. Parkinson, who was appointed in July 2021, certainly enjoyed Saturday's big win. He told reporters: "I think it's up there in terms of wins in my time as a manager at Wrexham because we've had a lot of disruption this week (with injuries).

"To have all that disruption and put in a performance like we did is enormous credit to the lads and Notts are a good side... but I thought the way the lads implemented the game plan we set out was outstanding and it was a really important three points for us."
