Liverpool's 'perfect replacement' for Salah makes honest admission amid links

Jarrod Bowen has lauded Mohamed Salah as one of the Premier League's finest finishers - just days after being tipped to replace the Liverpool talisman by his own teammate.

Bowen, 26, has established himself as one of the top-flight's most efficient forwards since joining West Ham back in 2020 and has regularly been linked with clubs in the top four. However, speculation linking him with a move to Anfield has gathered pace over the last 12 months, particularly in the wake of uncertainty over Salah's future.

Much like Salah, Bowen has been in red-hot form this season, plundering six goals in 11 appearances. And he's now outlined how he aspires to emulate the Liverpool forward's ability to always be in the right place at the time.

Speaking to TNT Sports prior to West Ham's Europa League loss against Olympiacos, Bowen said: “I’ve always wanted to score goals and get into the positions where the ball might fall to you. I’m always usually in a position in the box where I know that a chance might fall to me. It’s something I’ve been working on myself really with my dad; he speaks to me about it, he was a centre-forward and he understands it.

“We just have little chats about different runs to make and where to be in the box, and always be in the box. I think Salah’s the best at it and obviously Haaland, too.

“They’re always positioning themselves where they think they’re going to score a goal. People say it’s scoring from four yards out but there’s a special art to it of picking up that space in the box and kind of anticipating where the ball’s going to be. So definitely something that I’ve not been working on the training pitch, just more probably looking at videos and having a chat about it really.”

Bowen's comments come just days after he was touted as the perfect forward to replace Salah, who is expected to be the subject of further interest from Saudi Arabia following failed bids in the summer transfer window. Intriguingly, though, that recommendation came from Michail Antonio: one of Bowen's teammates at West Ham.

Speaking on the Footballer's Football podcast, Antonio said of Bowen: “He is a bags-man! Everything he is touching is turning to gold right now. But hey, it's going to cost a lot of dough, man has just signed a seven-year deal.

“The money you get from Salah, you are going to have to give it to us! He's quality, left-footed and plays on the right-hand side like Mo Salah, so he is the perfect replacement, but hey, it's not going to be easy to get him out of here. It won't be easy because that's a seven-year contract man has just signed.
