A murderer who killed two of his ex-wives has been charged with killing his third wife after reportedly torturing her to death while out on parole.

Necati Akpınar stabbed his first wife in 1984 and ended the life of his second by burning her with an iron in 2003, according to local media. But he was conditionally released from prison in October 2020 due to Covid-19 measures in place at that time. He was allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence at the home he shared with his wife, Mutlu Menekşe, in Saruhanlı, Turkey.

Mutlu’s dead body was found buried in the garden of a property in the district in December last year. The third alleged killing was discovered after his own daughter reported him to police after he ordered and threatened her to bury the corpse. A recent autopsy report shows the 48-year-old mum of two was brutally tortured to death.

Forensic expert Halis Dokgöz said: “When we look at the Forensic Report, we see that the woman suffered continuous trauma at different times. There are various colours of ‘bruises’ or internal bleeding. There are severe burns on her body, second- and third-degree burns.

“There’s a fracture in the neck vertebra, and bone fractures. There’s bleeding in the spinal cord, bleeding in the brain. It caused organ failures such as kidney failure and lung failure due to both the trauma the person suffered, the bruises, and the burns. All of these together explain her death.”

Prosecutors from the Manisa 1st Heavy Penal Court have now charged Akpınar with the ‘intentional killing of a woman through torture’. According to lawyer Yalçın Arcak, who is representing Mutlu’s family, the first trial hearing will be held in December 2024. He said: “We anticipate that the culprit will receive the highest possible punishment.”
