Roma boss Jose Mourinho was sent off on Sunday after telling Monza counterpart Raffaele Palladino: “You talk a lot and then you cry.”

In the final minutes of the Stadio Olimpico encounter – which Roma edged out 1-0, against a visiting side who had been reduced to ten men in the first half – Mourinho mocked Monza’s bench, drawing the referee’s attention, and earning a red card in the ninth minute of added time.

The Portuguese boss will now serve a one-match suspension, meaning that he will miss the Giallorossi’s upcoming clash against his former club Inter. It is not the first time that Mourinho has encountered disciplinary problems while Roma boss.

Mourinho was dismissed from the dugout on three occasions last season, against Cremonese, Torino and Atalanta respectively – more than any other player or manager in Italy’s top flight last term. He has also picked up multiple bookings, including in his side’s recent win over Cagliari.

“I made some gestures, I said nothing offensive,” Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia after Sunday’s win over Monza, in quotes carried by Football Italia. “It was because last season some talented people, but lacking in experience, had some nasty words about us.

“Today the only ones making a show on the touchline and trying to pressure the referee were Monza. I am honest, they are a good team and did not deserve to lose today.”

Mourinho added, following a game that was decided by Stephan El Shaarawy’s late winner: “I think Monza did not deserve to lose the match. Obviously, I am very happy with the points, but I always felt my team was struggling. We made a lot of technical errors, the players were physically drained after long journeys on international duty.”

Mourinho had previously claimed he wore a wire on the touchline during Roma’s 1-1 draw at Monza in Serie A in March, to “protect myself” from the match officials. He tore into the official Daniele Chiffi after the game, describing the 38-year-old official as “the worst I’ve ever encountered.”

“I’m not stupid, you know,” Mourinho had said following that game against Monza. “Today, I went to the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the locker room, to the moment I returned. I protected myself.”

The Roma boss had continued: “He [Chiffi] is the worst referee I have met in my life,” Mourinho said. “He is the worst. Technically he’s horrible. Zero empathy. Zero communication. Zero awareness.”
