Racing officials in Australia are hunting spectators who threw cans of beer onto the racetrack as horses approached the finish of a big New Year’s Eve race.

At least two cans landed on the surface near to the horses competing for the A$750,000 (£423,000) King Of The Mountain race at Toowoomba in Queensland. Thankfully none of the runners were hit during the incident which can be seen on the race footage.

Toowoomba Turf Club officials have appealed for help from those among the crowd of 3,000 who may have captured the incidents on their mobile phone.

If the culprits can be identified stewards have the power to issue permanent exclusion orders rom all Queensland racecourses.

Turf Club chief executive Lizzie King condemned the behaviour telling the Punters.com website: “We will be working with QRIC stewards over the next couple of days.

"The club is absolutely appalled by the incident, how anyone could even get that in their head is beyond us.

"We put something on social media asking for footage because we knew there were so many on course, and people were really quite helpful.

"That type of behaviour is abhorrent and won't be tolerated at Clifford Park, nor any racecourse - it raises a whole heap of issues.

"Beyond that disappointing incident, it was a fantastic night so it was a shame one person decided to do that. Rest assured the club wants to see this person appropriately dealt with."
