Gareth Southgate has blasted England fans who BOOED Jordan Henderson during the Three Lions’ narrow win over Australia at Wembley.
Southgate made Henderson his captain for the night but the ex-Liverpool midfielder was loudly jeered by sections of the crowd when he was substituted just after the hour mark.
And the exasperated England boss said: “It defies logic that some supporters would boo a player who gives his heart and soul into playing for England. I really don’t understand it. He is a player who has 79 caps for England and his commitment and what he delivers is exceptional.
“His role in the group on and off the pitch is phenomenally important. He is a brilliant role model in the group. And his influence during the game is hugely important. I don’t understand what this is for.”
When Henderson’s name had been announced ahead of the game, it was met with a smattering of jeers. This was Henderson’s first game on English soil since his controversial move to Saudi Pro League side, Al Ettifaq.

In a forgettable friendly, Watkins converted a Jack Grealish shot in the 57th minute to give England the win. It was Watkins’ third England goal in eight appearances, justifying his recall to Southgate’s squad after an 18-month absence.

There were a few times before I got called up and didn't think I deserved it but now I am coming in confident in myself off the back of good form. I have been waiting a long time for the next call up - I wasn't going to let this opportunity slip.”
Southgate was pleased with Watkins not thrilled with the performance, saying: “We made a lot of changes - that made it really difficult for the players. We were not cohesive, I gave them a really tough challenge. There were some positives but we can play better.”
