Strictly Come Dancing partners Zara McDermott and Graziano Di Prima have been arguing like an old married couple - over pasta.
The 26-year-old former Love Island contestant and the 29-year-old Italian dance professional found themselves in hot water on the long-running BBC dance contest over the weekend as they suffered low scores and found themselves in the dance off - where they narrowly managed to survive. But now tensions are bubbling for entirely non-dance related issues after Zara insulted one of Graziano’s famous native dishes.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Zara put on a mocking accent and started making demands for different types of pasta. But the Italian dance expert was left unimpressed when she declared that she would like some carbonara pasta - with the addition of cream.
Footage shared on Instagram showed Zara and Graziano sat side by side - while an unflattering filter gave them cartoon effect large eyes and warped faces. As the footage played, Zara could be heard asking in a child-like voice: “Can I have some penne pasta? Some linguine? Can I have a carbonara? With cream?”
Looking horrified, Graziano turned to Zara and asked: “Why are you going it like that?” Offended by the suggestion of adding cream to carbonara, he then said: “You prepare a meal for me. Right? And you say ‘I’m going to prepare it for you like Italian flavour’. You put the cream in the carbonara. Let me prepare my recipe.”
Strictly's Molly Rainford and Tyler West fuel romance rumours while on tourHe then suggest Brits would be horrified if someone added barbecue sauce to a Sunday roast - however Zara insisted: “I wouldn’t be as angry as you, though. This is the thing. You don’t … You guys get so offended about the cream in the carbonara.”
Adding cream to carbonara is indeed seen as a cooking crime in the eyes of Italians who cook the dish only with cheese and eggs. Defending the traditional way of preparing the food, Graziano asked: “The question is, why would you change the recipe?”
Zara suggested: “Some people just want a bit of cream in it. People want a bit more sauce.” But Graziano declared the only way to create more sauce would be to add: “More pecorino and egg yolk!”
Zara then said: “I don’t know if we have pecorino in Sainsbury’s. Do we have that in Sainsbury’s? No?” Graziano then addressed the camera directly and asked: “Sainbury’s do we have that?” The pair then both broke into fits of giggles.
While Zara proved herself to be a heathen when it comes to cooking pasta, she did taunt Graziano further after he pitched a poll to social media followers and was aghast when many replied saying they would add cream to the iconic Italian dish. The only votes that really matter for the pair, however, are those of the Strictly judges - and Zara and Graziano came dangerously close to being sent home over the weekend.
The duo found themselves in the bottom two and had to dance off against presenter Nikita Kanda and her dance partner Gorka Márquez. Ultimately, the judges voted to save Zara and Graziano - sending Nikita and Gorka home.
