Krishnan Guru-Murthy issues worrying health update as he's 'constantly in pain'

Channel 4 News presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy has been busy delighting Strictly Come Dancing fans performances in recent weeks with a series of surprisingly entertaining routines. The 53-year old recorded a series personal best of 30 on Saturday - as he impressed judges Craig Revell Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke with a Movie Week Charleston - alongside professional dance partner, Lauren Oakley.

Those routines, and the grueling training schedule it takes to master them, however, have come at a cost to the journalist, who has admitted to being blighted by pain. Krishnan, who also revealed he is being "stopped in the street" as fans tell him "how much they're enjoying" his performances, told heat magazine: "I'm in constantly in pain," he said.

"You're using muscles that you didn't know you had when you dance - you use literally every inch of your body including your face, your fingers, your toes," responded Lauren. Confessing that Lauren hasn't been working him as hard as she could have done, meanwhile, the dancer stressed the importance of keeping Krishnan "fighting fit".

Krishnan also confessed to suffering from numerousness - a feeling he hasn't felt in the public eye for some time. "I have rediscovered nerves being on Strictly," he said. "I haven't been nervous on TV in years so these feelings are really taking me back to the start of my career. It's an incredibly nerve-wracking show to be a part of, even though my goal is to just enjoy myself."

Last month Krishnan opened up about his genetic heart condition which could impact his performance on the show and means the Strictly crew have to keep a defibrillator on set while he dances. The star has been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which according to the British Heart Foundation is a disease of your heart muscle, where the muscle wall of your heart becomes thickened.

The condition, which has killed two of his cousins, can make the heart muscle stiff. This in turn makes it harder for the heart to pump blood out of the heart and around the body. Speaking about his health, Krishnan said that it's important he keeps his 'heart out of the red zone' and said his cardiologist wasn't able to promise him that 'he won't drop dead' while performing.

Krishnan told The Sun: "The basic advice is, I've got to keep my heart out of the red zone, which is the last 15 percent of your heart rate. So, I've got to keep my heart rate below about 140, and I don't know whether you can do that or not, in a 90-second very fast dance. My cardiologist basically said, 'I can't give you a hundred percent guarantee that you won't drop dead, but you'll be fine'. The Charleston will be a challenge, but we'll see."
