Sterling's true feelings on new England 'snub' after Saka injury withdrawal

Raheem Sterling does not see his latest England omission as a snub. In fact, Sterling is determined to fight for his place despite the fierce competition in his position at international level.

Chelsea forward Sterling has not been in England’s last two squads and was not drafted in when Bukayo Saka had to withdraw through injury on Monday night.

But, in truth, Gareth Southgate did name a 26-man squad in the first place to cover for withdrawals and also probably thinks Sterling is a senior player and might be beyond being a last minute replacement. Effectively, Southgate knows what Sterling can do because he has scored 20 goals in 82 caps and has always been a big game player for England.

England boss Southgate has often left tried and trusted senior players out in the past - and still recalled them because he knows he can rely on them. Kyle Walker being a classic example. The Manchester City defender appeared out in the cold, even wanted to quit England twice - and has now never been more important for Southgate.

Sterling, 28, is also facing major competition in the wide areas with Saka, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden and even James Maddison. England are really well stocked there but playing for his country is still vital to Sterling who sees it a driving force for his career.

He is now focused on his performances, his whole attitude is geared towards playing at his best for Chelsea. This season has shown a huge upturn in his form as he was outstanding in Chelsea’s win at Burnley on Saturday which was certainly a timely reminder.

Sterling has made a habit of thriving on pressure, competition and even doubt because he seems to be at his best when people do doubt him as a player.

Southgate and Sterling still have a very good relationship, there is mutual respect and the Chelsea star is also respected by England’s other coaches.

Sterling has shown good leadership skills at Chelsea in a young dressing room and that has been highlighted by Cole Palmer’s arrival at Stamford Bridge. Palmer is a player that Sterling supported at City and is now helping at Chelsea.

He has also built a strong, beneficial relationship with Mauricio Pochettino and has never withdrawn himself for England.

This is undoubtedly Sterling’s biggest challenge as an England player with the Euros around the corner. But Sterling is ready for the fight.
