The smiles were glittering before the eyes started glistening as the famous faces descended on the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with TSB.

Most of the stars knew that celebrating the nation’s most astonishing unsung heroes would leave them in tears. Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway said: “This restores your faith in human nature. The people who receive the awards make you feel so humble.”

Strictly dance pro Amy Dowden, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, looked stunning on the red carpet without a wig. Strictly head judge Shirley Ballas called the awards the “most special night on the calendar”, adding: “I have to get the box of tissues out but I love it.”

GMB presenter Susanna Reid said: “This is the best night of the year.” Broadcaster Vanessa Feltz said of the nominees and winners: “They are the most amazing, courageous people. You cannot believe what you are seeing and hearing.”

Paralympics star Ellie Simmonds said: “I have the waterproof mascara and fake eyelashes on because there is not a dry eye in the house.” TV presenter Gloria Hunniford was not as well prepared. She said: “I’ve got my tissues but forgot about the mascara so that will probably be all down to my chin.”

For star couple Frank and Christine Lampard, the awards are special because it is where they met 14 years ago. Christine said: “It changed our lives. It’s lovely to have a night where we can celebrate and see the people who go above and beyond.” Others at the event at Grosvenor House in Mayfair, London, included Dancing On Ice judge Oti Mabuse who showed off her baby bump.
