Comedy hit Brassic is set to be axed after its top stars told bosses they want to focus on other projects.

The Sky show, which stars Joe Gilgun and Michelle Keegan, is currently on its fifth series. Rumour has it that will be followed by a Christmas special – then a final series next year. The move is said to have come after some of the cast – including Plebs star Ryan Sampson – voiced a reluctance to continue.

A Sky source says: “Brassic is very unlikely to return after next year’s sixth series. It’s had incredible success, but the feeling among some of the cast is that it’s time to move on. Ryan was considering leaving after series five, but was persuaded to continue by the bosses at Sky. Michelle is also finding it harder to work her schedule around filming as she’s in demand for so many projects. Bosses now want to make sure the show goes out with a bang. They’re working on a final episode that will really shock.”

Brassic, which is set in the fictional northern town of Hawley, follows a group of skint pals and their efforts to scrape together a living – often on the wrong side of the law. The Crown actor Dominic West and It’s A Sin’s Neil Ashton also star, and Lee Mack , Greg Wise and Imelda Staunton are among the celebs to have had cameo roles in the cult hit.

A Sky spokesperson denied the show had been cancelled, adding: "The show remains one of Sky’s best performing original comedies." David Livingstone, Executive Producer of Brassic, Calamity Films, added: “We just released series five and the ratings are through the roof with a Christmas special and a sixth series in production.". But a Sky source said a decision had not been made regarding the production of series seven. All we want to know is, if Brassic hits the skids, where are we supposed to get our Adidas and hoop earring fashion inspo from?
