BBC Radio 2 without Ken Bruce is unthinkable for many of us - but that's the reality.

After entertaining us for more than three decades, the avuncular Scot is taking his warm and friendly tones to Greatest Hits Radio (GHR).

The 71-year-old, whose weekday BBC show attracts millions of listeners, will be replaced by 2020 I'm a Celebrity finalist and former Radio One DJ Vernon Kay.

Ken is synonymous with his popular PopMaster quiz, with fans tuning in every weekday at 10.30am to hear contestants flex their pop trivia knowledge from the 50s to present day.

The final edition edition will be broadcast as part of his final show this Friday, March 3, but listeners need not fear as he's taking the format with him to GHR.

Speaking after announcing Ken's departure, a BBC spokesperson said: “Radio 2 will continue to be a multi-generational radio station that serves a 35-plus audience, a target audience which hasn’t changed in decades".

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1951, Ken began his radio career in Hospital Radio before moving to London where he later took up his role on Radio 2.

Ken told his fans earlier this month: “Nothing stays the same forever and I have decided the time is right for me to move on from Radio 2 when I reach the end of my current contract in March.

“It’s been a tremendously happy time for me. I’ve made many friends and worked with many wonderful colleagues.”

Radio 2 currently attracts more than 14 million listeners, but the fast-growing commercial rival GHR is nipping at its heels with 4.4 million.
