One EFL chairman given his verdict on the potential takeover at Everton by 777 Partners, while drawing attention to the struggles of Todd Boehly at Chelsea.

Outspoken Peterborough United chief Darragh MacAnthony has warned that the Merseyside club may require a complete overhaul in the coming years. It has been a fraught six years for the Toffees following the takeover of Farhad Moshiri and MacAntony is convinced new owners would not have it easy either.

The Iranian billionaire has agreed to sell his 94.1 per cent stake in the club to 777, an American company with a portfolio of clubs around the world. This encompasses Standard Liege, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Red Star and Vasco da Gama, as well as shares in Sevilla and Melbourne Victory.

MacAnthony is convinced that the task facing the Miami-based private investment company is sizeable, especially Moshiri's lack of success during his six-year tenure despite investing heavily. Speaking on his podcast, he said: "All I ever said was the owner of Everton has put, what, £700million in? And he has just been hammered."

Touching on the problems Boehly has also faced at Chelsea, despite spending nearly £1billion in the transfer market since taking over, he explained: "Talk about self-torture, if you want to torture yourself, waste a billion dollars - a bit like what Todd Boehly is going through at Chelsea. I really don’t know a lot about them - who knows?

"Everton seem to be that club who keep hanging on and how long can you keep hanging on until your nails snap? They seem to be on a clifftop trying to claw their way back up. Maybe that club needs an exorcism from top to bottom for it to build again."

In addition, the Posh chairman expressed the opinion that Everton would potentially need a so-called 'cleansing' if they are to find success in the future. However, he does warn that this could potentially involve the club losing its top flight status after 73 years as they potentially take a step backwards to move forward.

"It’s like an exorcism," he continued. "You have to go through the whole thing. We’ve gone through something like that this summer on and off the pitch - you need a cleansing. You need a bit of a blessing and maybe that’s what Everton need."

He added: "If they don’t turn out to be not great owners, someone else will come in and buy it. This idea that Everton will go out of business - clubs like that never do, they’ll always get rescued."

The Blues have narrowly avoided the drop into the Championship in each of the last two seasons and find themselves 15th in the Premier League table currently. The deal for the sale of Everton to 777 still remains subject to Premier League approval.
