BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher rushed to hospital after anaphylactic shock

Football commentator Darren Fletcher has been rushed to hospital after suffering anaphylactic shock.

Fletcher, who is the lead commentator for BT Sport, said he was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham in the early hours of Wednesday morning because he had been struggling to breathe. He praised the work of the hospital staff and said he might be able to return home later on Wednesday.

He wrote on Twitter : “Had anaphylactic shock in the early hours which was quite scary - it was a reaction to something. Struggled to breath and stuff but the staff at the QMC have been brilliant.

“The adrenaline was interesting! Hoping to be home later.”

Anaphylactic shock is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

After receiving message of support from colleagues and well-wishers, Fletcher added: "Thanks for the messages - they’ve perked me up no end and lots have made me laugh. It’s very much appreciated x."

Fletcher, 50, is a well-known voice in football broadcasting. He covers Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League matches for BT Sport.

Fellow sports broadcaster Matt Smith wrote: "V glad to hear you’re on mend and in good hands mate." Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell wrote: “Get well and stay safe Fletch! Absolutely fantastic people at the QMC too."

Fletcher, who was previously a director at Notts County, has worked for BT Sport since 2013. He worked alongside former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage on a show called 'Fletch and Sav' and has commentated on Champions League games since the broadcaster won the rights in 2015.

While best known for his football commentary, he has previously worked on other sports, including boxing and baseball. He was a part of the BBC Sport team which worked on the London 2012 Olympic Games.
