Virgil van Dijk has won the Champions League, Premier League and finished second in the Ballon d'Or voting during his time at Liverpool.

But, according to AI, his stats aren't quite good enough and he wouldn't make a best Liverpool XI in the Premier League era.

There has been no shortage of elite talent turning out for the Reds since the First Division was relaunched in 1992. Liverpool have won the league once in the 2019-20 campaign and finished runners-up five times since then. They have also never finished lower than eighth, meaning there are a lot of top players to pick from when attempting to select Liverpool's greatest-ever Premier League XI.

But when Mirror Football asked ChatGPT to do just that and the current Liverpool skipper wasn't included... well we were a little bit shocked. In goal, Alisson who has played a crucial role in their recent success under Jurgen Klopp since making a £66.5m move from Roma in 2018, was given the nod.

In the back four, Trent Alexander-Arnold was picked at right-back having developed into one of the best in the world since making his debut in 2016. And after deciding against selecting Van Dijk, Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia line up in the heart of defence for ChatGPT.

Carragher and Hyypia formed an impressive partnership under Rafa Benitez and both played a key role in Liverpool's memorable 2005 Champions League win. Andrew Robertson gets the nod at left-back ahead of John Arne Riise, having also played such a key role in Liverpool's recent success.

Steven Gerrard, of course, makes the team after cementing his status as one of the club's greatest ever players in his 17 years at Anfield. Gerrard made 710 appearances for Liverpool, the third-most in the club's history, and scored 186 goals, a figure only surpassed by five other players. Xabi Alonso and Jordan Henderson line up alongside Gerrard in the centre of the park.

Alonso only spent five seasons at Liverpool before joining Real Madrid, but the Spaniard's quality was on show as he helped them win the Champions League and the FA Cup. Henderson, meanwhile, captained the club to their first ever Premier League title before leaving to join Saudi club Al-Ettifaq this summer.

The attack chosen is particularly formidable, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Suarez leading the line. Salah is Liverpool's leading Premier League goalscorer, while both Mane and Suarez also won the Premier League golden boot during their time at Anfield.
